Reel Analytics - Sell and market more effectively

April 11, 2011 | by Mike Chiavetta

Category: Marketing

For those of us who sell, market and promote for a living, it's not just about pushing the content - it's about the effectiveness and value of that content. What's the point of sending a reel if we can't measure its performance?

It's one of the most critical steps in the sales process - sending reels opens doors to new projects, new money-making channels, and hopefully new recognition and awards. Simian invests heavily in giving you the most extensive set of analytics tools to measure your muscle. There are three sets of data sources from which we pull metrics: email, video and the user. It's displayed in an easy-to-read dashboard - powerful, actionable data that nobody else in the industry offers.

This post was spurred by a recent conversation with a high level client who wanted to know if her reel had been opened. We showed her that it had indeed been opened, but more importantly, we explained how she could see exactly which spots were viewed, how many times, and for how long. And even if the reel was forwarded!

Since these tools are new to the industry laying it out in a real world scenario should help you understand WHY you need these tools and HOW to use them.

So you're in Simian, you're creating a specialty reel for a job that just got announced, or your promoting some new work to your contacts. You're happy with the reel, you're message is dialed in, you hit send….what do you do now. Wait for the email notification that its been viewed? Ok thats cool, what if that doesn't come? Did they get your email? Suppose they did click "view reel" were the videos actually viewed or did they do that to appease you? Did the crafty producer just copy the link and watch the reel without you knowing? Are they in the office? Are they on their phone or ipad? There are so many unknowns. Simian gives you all this info and now you have the upper hand and the information to sell more effectively.

Email Metrics:
Track if your email was delivered.
Track Email Opens. (email was recieved and opened but they didn't click view reel)
Track View Reel Clicks on the date and time of view
Track Email Forwards to other email addresses (and their engagement)

User Metrics:
What IP address (with map to location)
What City and State
What device (computer, handheld, phone, tablet)
What browser

Video Metrics:
Track number of views per video
Track Full views and Partial views

Reel Analytics View by Email Address

- We can see that all emails sent were opened.
- Brian viewed the reel 22 separate times! Thats a good sign
- Kellie received and opened the email but didn't view the reel. hmm.. busy? Not interested? Let's ask Brian.

Reel Analytics Overview

- We can see that Brian has viewed this reel on his Mac in Firefox and he's either on a laptop or desktop.
- He's in Laguna so we know he's at the office. He clicked "view reel" 22 separate times! He's loving it.
- He also forwarded the email.
- From the per video views we can tell he's into the first few spots. He's also downloaded the reel. He's watching offline too, awesome!

The whole purpose of Simian is to build the best platform with the best tools so you have everything you need to sell your work.

Simian Encoding Analyzer

Category: Software Updates

Combine higher-rated content with lower-than-average network connections, and the viewing experience can become a real drag. In the past, you may have had to inspect the media files to ensure proper encoding – a time consuming and redundant task.

Now when you upload a video, the Simian Encoding Analyzer will extract and analyze the meta data to identify its bit rate.  Simian automatically creates a warning label for files that have high bit rates and flags the video in the Media Library.

Not all users will experience difficulty with video playback. Older computers, weak wireless signals and overloaded network connections are most likely to cause problems.
